Liar, Liar. Pants on FIRE.

Alright ladies.. it's time to vent.

Something happened yesterday that really made my blood boil. Here I am, playing catch up from being so behind with all things blog, and I come across something seriously disturbing. As most of you know, I hosted a December Sponsor Giveaway a week or so ago. If you missed out, that's a bummer - it was pretty rad.

With a total of 20 prizes I originally was going to split the package and have 4 winners. Starting my day off super excited to have winners chosen finally, I email all of my wonderful participants to verify each winner. Now, with my giveaways, the rules are CLEARLY stated not only in my post, but also in the Terms and Conditions on the Rafflecopter. I had specific MANDATORY entries to simply follow all of the participants, including myself.

My first ever giveaway that I participated in a couple months ago, the one winner who received my TWENTY DOLLAR gift card is still not following me, to this day. Sorry, but I think that's kind of rude. If I'm giving you a gift, the least you could do is follow my blog (or at least show me a little courtesy!!!). Later down the road if you don't really like my writing style you can make that decision yourself. I didn't want any of my participants feeling the way I felt when that happened - so I made those entries mandatory. Are there really that many of you who don't know what MANDATORY means? Sheesh!!!!

Now, I'm trying to stay calm, and I'm trying to not be a mean girl.

Once I had emailed my lovely ladies about the 4 winners that were chosen at random, I couldn't believe how many couldn't be verified! I started to lose count. It was a HUGE mess and I got more and more aggravated with each unverified entry. It took the entire morning redrawing and redrawing and still NOT ONE had completed the mandatory entries.

WHAT THE FDHFOISNFLKS - (insert bad word here)!

Liars?! Really?! What I honestly don't understand, is we take the time out of our day (TIME IS PRECIOUS) to put together an amazing giveaway with FOUR opportunities to win and only ask a small amount of mandatory-ness and you can't give us the courtesy to FOLLOW THE MF RULES?!

I've heard the horror stories of people going through this with giveaways and I was hoping to never come across that, but apparently I didn't hope hard enough. Apparently we have greedy, lying, sneaky, bloggers out there who don't give a rat's ass about who is donating - all they care about is the prize. Which is fine... just GTFO of my giveaway and my blog. I work SO hard to fulfill my end of every bargain I take on and I really don't appreciate this bullshit.

You really have no idea how hard it is for me to be this nice while ranting about how pissed off I am...

The funny part is, I could literally name names and point fingers at all of you who failed to play fair (you know who you are!!!!). And yet, I am going to be the bigger person and not stoop to the low level that you are already standing on. My view is MUCH better from up here anyway.

Did you honestly think I wouldn't verify? Do you think I write those conditions merely for my own humor? DO YOU NEED TO GET A CAT SCAN ON YOUR CRAZY THOUGHT PROCESS OF A BRAIN!?

UGH

Can you tell I'm smokin'? Every one of you (I'm sure there are a ton more and I'm sure you know who you are) that I could not verify with every one of my participants have gone to the bottom of my list. I will not work with you, promote you, or help you with anything in the future. I will not rant and rave about you and your blog. I will not waste my precious time giving you any second thought. You have wasted mine and 15 other ladies time since I had to send them all on a wild goose chase trying to figure out who followed and who did not. Do you know how HARD and time consuming it is to look for a GFC follower?

Let this be a lesson for the future. I have now trimmed down from FOUR winners to only TWO winners. And that's totally unfair to those of you who did play fairly. I apologize whole-heartedly if you were not drawn, but thank you so so much for actually doing what was necessary.

I'm honestly having reservations about ever having a giveaway again.

So, from now on my fellow blogging beauties - you WILL follow my rules if you plan to enter any giveaway I host. Sorry, I'm not sorry for being demanding, but you won't like the repercussions of what will come if you shall lie again. You have my word - Mean Tarole is not a good Tarole. Let's not bring out that side mmmmmmKAY?

There are ways people, there are ways....

Rant over.

Haole Girl OUT!

Bravo!! I'm always worried when I enter from my phone that I think it went though and it hasn't buy as a giveaway doer, I completely agree! Confirming is hard and you are awesome!

Great post! I always find it funny how quickly a few people unfollow as soon as the giveaway is over. If I were you i'd probably just shoot an email to whomever entered and didn't check out so they can see what they are missing out on and maybe won't continue to falsely enter stuff! Because if they do it here, they probably do it everywhere unfortunately.

For those of who don't use rafflecopter to host our own giveaways, a question.. are the entries before you get to extra entries always mandatory? If you "enter" on those, but you don't do all of them, does it still send your entries in? Just wondering how it works.. it's possible people are not being dishonest, just don't know how it actually works (like me!). Also, sometimes I've done all but one because I can't find their GFC thing or whatever way to follow! So just remember you have readers who aren't also bloggers :)
Anyway, I know it's annoying to verify (I had to on my FB page for my Etsy shop), so I know it's a hassle regardless & I'm sure is a frustrating process even if it all works out well!

I feel ya! I encountered similar problems with my giveaways too! Once a winner is picked, I always make sure to verify that they completed the mandatory entries first!

While I completely understand where you're coming from-I have also experienced anger over giveaways and other blogging "fluff" as I now like to call it-I have to look at this from the other side. I honestly can't be 100% sure if I entered this giveaway. There were SO many giveaways going on in December and I've been traveling and busy so I can't remember all I've done. If I didn't enter yours, I know I entered one similar with a lot of the same people. Let me explain how I approach giveaways. I've stopped entering giveaways just for the sake of entering. I'm more than likely not going to follow someone simply because they're giving something away. It's not that I have anything against that person, I just want to follow people that I'm truly interested in reading. I don't want to simply be a "follower." While it does stink to give someone a prize and not have them follow you, it stinks even more (in my opinion) to have a lot of "followers" and not a lot of readers. I enter people's giveaways to try and be supportive of that blogger-no one likes to host a giveaway and have low entries. I never really expect to win (I've not been lucky in that department).

Looking at your giveaway, I'm not sure if the people in question lied and said they followed people, but didn't (in that case, I agree-that was wrong) or did what I would have done and just "entered" beside the people they already followed. To be honest, most of the time when I see a giveaway post, I just skim over the post to get an idea of who's involved and what's being given away. Then, I decide if I want to enter. When I see "mandatory" entries as set up by Rafflecopter, I think that those are the things they want you to do. If you do those things, you get rewarded by having the chance to gain more entries. I've never looked at mandatory Rafflecopter entries as truly mandatory to the giveaway (probably because I've never used them that way). I don't know if that makes sense. I do know what mandatory means, but I guess I just never thought of it that way. I do see where you stated the rules above the giveaway and in my case, if I entered, I didn't catch all of that and that was my mistake.

Anyway, sorry for the super long comment, but I just wanted to point out that not everyone is a liar, cheater, and schemer. Some people just make honest mistakes (especially when it's the holidays and there are so many giveaways and things going on).

Hilary said...

Ohh, even Megan's comment cleared that up for me a little -- so I guess you can rafflecopter is set up so that you receive entries even if you don't do all of the "mandatory" ones (in which case, technically they aren't mandatory, & if someone didn't read your whole post, they might not have noticed). So that clears that up a little..

Quoting Megan: I just want to follow people that I'm truly interested in reading. I don't want to simply be a "follower." While it does stink to give someone a prize and not have them follow you, it stinks even more (in my opinion) to have a lot of "followers" and not a lot of readers.

I totally agree with Megan. Wouldn't you rather have followers genuinely interested in what you have to say rather than people who are sort of forced to enter your giveaway for the sake on an entry? I personally will never enter a giveaway if the mandatory entry is to follow a blog I have no interest in reading otherwise.

Tarole said...

I agree with Megan. If you do not like my blog, and you do not want to follow, then by all means - please don't. I would much rather have quality over quantity and I've never stated otherwise. I love when my readers interact with me and give me feedback. I do the same for blogs that I follow. Why should someone who doesn't even like my blog or follow win a prize from me anyway? Does that make sense to you? I'd rather have low entries and readers enter and follow my blog because they like it rather than high entries with nothing but liars.

Why so glum grey face?

I have only done 1 Giveaway on my blog and that was enough. I had the same issues your having and the problem is not worth my time. Its just to bad because I had fun doing it but some people are such lairs!

I feel like regardless of any of these details...

the rules are the rules...

mandatory entries...if you are going to enter, do the entries right and be honest...if you aren't going to or cant follow through, don't enter. because we spend HOURS putting things like this together...

it has nothing to do with the details, its about the principle and having respect for other bloggers time and effort.

megan, you know I love you, and that was not toward you at all. December has been crazy and we all went giveaway nuts but this isn't just this month, it happens constantly.

I thought I was the only one whom people chose not to follow in linky parties and giveaways. I hosted this giveaway, where people just clicked on entries without ACTUALLY entering them. I'm so not gonna choose them. The better option is to just not give any prizes.

Kimberly H said...

Tarole, I'm SO sorry that you had to go through this and I'm totally with you on it! I've never actually gone and checked if all of the past winners of the giveaways I've been in are following me...but I'd be surprised if ALL of them are. I try to stick to the giveaway entering philosophy that Megan has - I use the entries for blogs that I already follow most of the time. I check out the other blogs and if I think I'll like them, then I follow them. If not, I don't.

Rafflecopter is sometimes frustrating because "mandatory" to get to the next level isn't the same as "mandatory" to enter the giveaway at all - so it IS possible to enter the giveaway fairly without doing all of the mandatory tasks. Still, I can't stand people who lie and say they've completed entries when they haven't. It's not fair to those of us who actually take the time to do it correctly.

yes yes a thousand times yes. this is so frustrating. but megan's comment does make sense and i think i might have done this.

Girl. I feel ya... I participated in a group giveaway... gladly mailed the winner a gift card to Target, then about a month later... she e-mails me to tell me she never received it. First of all... I was ticked... the dang mailman lost my gift card! Then come to find out... this girl never even took the time to follow my blog.. yet she had the nerve to email me 3 times trying to get me to send her a new gift card. It frustrates me to no end wondering if she really did get the other gift card, and why she cares so much about a stinkin' giftcard when she doesnt even take the time to follow my blog!!! Talk about angry.

Nessa @ Isle Style Living said...

Yikes, how frustrating.

I wonder (same as Megan and Hilary above) if some of the entries were honest mistakes?

For me, I've seen a lot of giveaways this month. I think I even entered a few. But a lot of them had about a trillion mandatory entries where I had to follow about 100 bloggers on GFC, Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram, etc... I usually start at the top of the "entry list" but as I work my way down, I change my mind because I don't want to follow so many people on so many different social media sites just for a chance to win a giveaway.

So in that case, where someone starts the mandatory entries but never finishes, does Rafflecopter include those as well? I honestly don't remember if I entered your giveaway or not but I do know that there were a few giveaways that I didn't complete all the "mandatory" entries. I'm not sure how that all works?

Well, in any case, I despise liars and cheaters and anyone who would throws their morals out the window for a blog giveaway has some serious issues.

stephanie said...

you know, I've been reading all these things about people being scammers and stuff with giveaways and have wiped my forehead and said "phew!" because i was certain i was not one of them, but reading through the comments and your post makes me think that perhaps i actually AM one of them.

giveaways are aiding in follower inflation - people are getting higher numbers of followers all over, but it means less because - in a sense - they're being bribed to be there. so when i enter a giveaway via rafflecopter, for the most part i click on everything and only subscribe/follow the blogs i am actually interested in. i have always seen the "mandatory entries" to basically mean that you cannot unlock the easier/more convenient/higher entry tasks until you do those things, i've never seen them as "YOU DO NOT WIN IF YOU DO NOT DO ALL OF THEM." i don't want to be someone whose following is spread so thin that i don't have the time or energy to invest in blogs i really actually enjoy.

just my .02

...and i am sorry!!! because i'm probably a culprit!

Stephanie darling, you are a no-reply blogger so I'm having to reply here to you.

I think a lot of people are taking what I said out of context. When I choose winners, I verify all of their entries including the one they were chosen for. The reason I got so angry is that obviously people checked the mandatory entries to get to the extra ones, when they didn't even complete the mandatory ones in the first place. That is where the lying comes in. That is where I'm having the issue.

If you only got half way through the mandatory ones then fine, but if you lied about doing all of them, that's where the problem is! I don't want people to follow my blog just to enter the giveaway. I don't want to give people prizes that just entered and followed to win. I want quality readers to shower with gifts as a thank you for being a supporter of my blog!

Hi Tarole,
I've only had two giveaways so this is great insight for me. I usually don't enter multiple blog giveaways b/c as Megan stated I'm not really interested in following blogs for the sake of a giveaway. They also want you to do so many things on so many different social media sites and with multiple blogs, I just don't have that kind of time.
I'm really sorry that people lied. That is just terrible. I hope you feel better after all of these comments. I got some good insight here as well so GREAT POST.

BTW I'm your newest follower. ha, ha, ha I had to throw that in there. I really am following you. You can check. :) Have a great day!

Oh hunny I can relate! So glad to see this post. People think we don't notice. And I read through the other comments and yes there are honest mistakes, but NOT everyone is an honest mistake and it makes me crazy too. I featured you post in my Friday's Fave because I think it needs to get out that we don't appreciate those ones that do it on purpose.

Cece said...

I sincerely hope I'm not one of the liars! And if I am I sincerely didn't mean to be. Also a lot of time the rules aren't broken down so well. It's just left to rafflecopter and that's not always clear. There are so many things that the group giveaways ask that it never occurred to me that I had to do ALL of them! I thought that each thing you do gets you an entry and the more you do increases your odds of winning. I've done 2 giveaways on my blog the old school way so perhaps it is just that I don't understand how rafflecopter works. It is truly rotten that people would intentionally do it; especially those who are bloggers themselves.

stephanie said...

what does a no reply blogger mean?? i use the name/url option, since it's the one that links to my blog because i don't use blogger.

sorry it got taken out of context. i completely agree with you though that it's a crapfest for people to lie about entries. that's one thing i at least refuse to do - i know some of the entries beyond the initial ones are easier or whatever, but i'm not about to lie just to enter all of them. sorry that happens, people suck sometimes.

Stephanie, when I receive comments I always reply back via email. When you are a no-reply blogger it means you don't have an email attached to your comment for me to reply to. Here's a link that gives you a step-by-step tutorial on how to fix that!

Totally going through the same thing with a giveaway thats live on my blog now! I'm a co-host, but the blogger running it started checking as soon as the entries started. Over half had not done the mandatory entry! It boggles my mind that people just skip over things. And it wasn't even complicated... it was just like our pages on facebook.

I thought the mandatory entry thing was pretty self explanatory, but after reading some of the comments here I am going to make a point of making it OVERLY clear which entries must be completed. :)

So glad you had the *balls* to rant about this! I am a big believer in bloggers telling it like it is! And if I entered this giveaway and missed a mandatory entry, I'm sorry! I'm pretty sure I did everything I was supposed to :s
